Another Early Morning

Today I got up early yet again. During the week I expect this, as work beckons and I like to get there on the early side. However, on the weekends I "dream" of sleeping in. Let me define "sleep in." After five days of getting up between 5:30 A.M. and 6:00 A.M., staying toasty warm in my bed until 8:00 PM is sleeping in. Certainly not my teenager's idea of sleeping in - they typically can sleep until 12 or 1PM!

Did I do that?  Hmm.. can't remember. Selective memory, you know.

Sleeping in on the weekends seems more like a dream than a reality though. Today we had to rise in the wee hours of the morning because my daughter was volunteering to help at the Science Olympiad. She had to be there by 6 A.M. You can imagine how much I was looking forward to that!

If your children are involved in sports, you also go through the "early" stage where  practices are scheduled in the A.M. This is when they are on the freshmen and JV teams, before they can drive themselves. Carpooling is an option, of course, but it doesn't always work out.

If they make Varsity, well then they are also old enough to drive, so they can get themselves back and forth to practice! But if you're Varsity you also get the better time slots, so you don't have to get up as early. And here' the rub. As a parent, you don't really benefit from this because you're not driving anymore! (Usually)

Between sports, music, other school activities, and family, it seems there's always a reason to get up early. The day is fast approaching when my teenagers will be out of the house and in college. I won't have to get up early any more. Contrarily, though, I think I will miss it!

  1. I consider a nice "sleep in" to be when I make it to 6:00! Normally I am going out the door at that time....so I guess that is sleeping in?

  2. It is funny when we start to accept 6:30, 7 or 8:00 as sleeping in. I consider anything past that 5:35am weekday alarm sleeping in!

  3. I always say I slept in if it's 8am. It makes me laugh when people say they slept until 10 or 12. I feel like it's the afternoon. Driving children from place to place has its good and bad points, doesn't it?

  4. Well, if you miss it, you could always get a puppy...ugh! I'm waiting for the day she can sleep past 6:30. I was getting into a pleasant "rut" of 8...

  5. A season for everything, right? Enjoy the time in the car with them while you can. And I agree with you, 8 a.m. would be a heavenly time to sleep in until.

  6. I am in "that season" of sleeping in until 7 or 8 a.m. The dog has his own door so I don't even need to let the dog out. It's not so much about "sleeping in" as it is getting up and "staying in." Love to move slowly through my morning. Ahhh...

  7. Sleeping in seems to have an earlier and earlier time as we get older. I can't imagine sleeping until noon, but I am sure I did that as a teenager.

  9. I so wish I could sleep in but I only do IF I am sick. Always been an early morning riser.

  10. Sleeping in to me is 7:00! Your post reminded me of the days when my daughter played travel softball. Often the fields were an hour or so away making a very early Saturday morning when she had to be there by 7:00am!

  11. Since my retirement I have no problem sleeping in as long as I please. Some days it's 9 am, other days it can be 11 or 12. I have no guilt about it after a lifetime of getting up to the alarm clock...and neither should you when your time comes. And it will!!

  12. So many early risers here. I'm retired, and still haven't mastered the art of sleeping in, but Barbara's comments above give me hope! I always consider anytime past 5:30 sleeping in. Occasionally, it happens. I know I never slept until noon as a teenager. My dad wouldn't let us.
